An extension and transformation of the existing Library Building, to provide additional functional spaces and to give opportunity for multiple groups to use the library simultaneously.
We prioritised the sustainable practice of retaining as much of the existing building as possible. As the existing building (being only 20 years old) was in sound condition, we were able to incorporate several elements into the new design – including the concrete slab, several brick-veneer walls and glazing. This also kept and evolved the school’s memories of the building and showcased to students that there are creative and sustainable ways to adapt our existing built environment.
Spaces in the new Library include a Prep Reading Cave, Reception, Browsing Areas, Maker Space (for IT classes, Robotics, extra-curricular, etc), Teacher Prep Area, and a Senior Teaching Area. Bright colours were used to differentiate the areas of the library, giving identity and contrast to the various functional areas within the greater space. High ceilings and the use of clerestory windows in the main Browsing Area provides optimum amounts of natural light and provides an uplifting space for reading and learning. A breezeblock walkway provides covered access from the school towards the church, with the experiential qualities of filtered light and shadows. Views up to the heritage church were prioritised in the new design, to connect the students to this iconic feature of their community.
