This boutique apartment building on the southern shore of Currimundi Lake evolved as a response to a unique brief for holiday accommodation centred on family gathering. During peak occupation, the building can operate as one large ‘beach house’ or as several totally isolated units. There is one unit per floor with communal facilities and carparking located on the ground level. The plan has been arranged to respond to the local climate and views, with verandas on all sides facilitating cross-ventilation and solar control. The built form is conceived as two separate volumes linked by bronze battened circulation spaces. The butterfly roof form reduces the scale of the building and gestures north to the ocean and south to the Glasshouse Mountains. The predominant feature of the facade is the perforated metal screen which provides varying levels of privacy whilst allowing breezes and sunlight to penetrate the interior. The filigreed screen, together with warm timber elements and crisp white render, provide a clean coastal aesthetic.
