Trade Training Centre

The new Trade Training Centre (TTC) at St Augustine’s College is part of the Trade Training Centres in Schools Program. The design strategy for the building focused on integration with the adjacent Augustine Centre. The new pavilion, set in the green common space at the heart of the campus, adds to the grouping of buildings at the core of the College circulation spine. Its prominent location enables the TTC to support the adjacent gathering spaces. The building incorporates a café/learning area which is accessible to the local community and where parents can gather and engage with the students undertaking training in the Centre.

The flexible interior planning means that the main kitchen, canteen kitchen and café area can operate independently or together, providing a diverse range of learning opportunities. The building compliments and frames views to the adjacent (and formally dominant) Augustine Centre through its form, materials and the use of red accent colours.

The design has introduced passive strategies where possible – natural lighting through skylights and extensive glazing, cross ventilation, external sun shading, rainwater collection and low energy lighting. Material included low embodied energy/ long lifecycle materials such as zinc cladding, face brickwork and bamboo flooring.

The Trade Training Centre at St Augustine’s College balances educational requirements with ESD principles by integrating passive design strategies such as natural lighting, cross-ventilation, sun shading, rainwater collection, and low-energy lighting to reduce operational and environmental costs. Durable, low-maintenance materials like zinc cladding, face brickwork, and bamboo flooring were chosen for sustainability. The centre supports hospitality training with flexible interior spaces, allowing the kitchen, canteen, and café to function independently or together. Additionally, the café serves as a community hub on select mornings, fostering social interaction and providing students with hands-on training opportunities.
